In Religion, the first graders hear about Jesus calling His disciples, Nicodemus, Jesus blessing the children and Jesus healing a crippled man. When Jesus’ disciples tried to keep the children away from Jesus, He was angry and corrected them and picked them up in His arms and blessed them. By doing this, Jesus makes clear His great love and concern for every person, including infants. We need to celebrate that we are so important to Jesus that He died to save us from our sins. We also learn that Jesus graciously heals our spiritual blindness as well as our human sickness.

In Religion, the first graders will hear the stories about Jesus’ miracles of healing Peter’s mother-in-law and the miraculous catch of fish. We need to understand that because we live in a sinful world, we will experience pain and illness but we should be assured that Jesus alone has the power over sin, death and Satan, including the power to help us with our physical problems. We also hear about the disciples and their miraculous catch of fish. Even though they fished all night catching no fish, when they obeyed Jesus’ suggestion, their nets couldn’t hold all the fish. Jesus’ miracles show us that He is God and we should follow Him as our Lord and Master as we listen to His Word.

Memory work:

31. Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

32. The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin. Numbers 14:18
